RIDGEBACKS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME

RESCUE APPEAL

Demands on the financial resources of Midlands & Northern Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue continue to grow. During 2007 over 80 ridgebacks were re-homed, some being less than three months old! Many had experienced no form of socialisation or leadership leading to lengthy and costly rehabilitation, while being maintained safely in commercial kennels. Some, while not requiring rehabilitation need the safety of kennels, either because they can no longer stay at their current homes or are picked up as strays. Those of us that have used the services of commercial kennels know that it is not a cheap exercise.

Currently, funds available to help these poor unfortunates are at a dangerously low level. In short without your help it will not be long before we have to cease rescue work altogether. What will then happen to those needy dogs can only be imagined. If you would like to help by making a cash donation or setting up a regular standing order, please contact:

It is a sad fact that there are Ridgebacks that need re-homing and their number is increasing each year.

The reasons for parting are many ranging from the genuine such as the death of an owner, to the absurd, "he's too big and boisterous"! (he is a Ridgeback after all!)

The Midlands & Northern Rescue are asked to re-home both dogs and bitches from as young as four months to the oldies of twelve and thirteen years. Our rescue co-ordinator, Janice, works tirelessly to find them permanent homes matching dogs and prospective owners to ensure, to the best of our abilities, that it will be the last time the dog has to go through the trauma of being "passed on".

Rhodesian Ridgebacks Needing New Homes
While we do our best to give an honest opinion of all dogs that need re-homing, it must be stressed that all too often details which accompany these recycled Ridgebacks are at best sketchy and sometimes incorrect. However, below are photographs and details of just a few of the dogs that are looking for new homes.
Holly - Currently in Kennels
Age 5 Years
Female

Holly is another girl who is suffering from a lack of socialisation as a puppy. More than this she has been teased by a young child and as a consequence does not get on with them. Holly would need to be re-homed as an only dog in a household without children.

Holly
Taff - Currently in Kennels
Age 4 Years
Male

Taff is a very confident dog who is very happy and relaxed with people. Unfortunately he cannot live with cats or other small animals. he would best be re-homed as an only dog or possibly with females of similar size to himself.

Taff
Sampson - Currently at Home
Age 9 Years
Male

Unfortunately due to a change in his owners circumstances  this old boy is now seeking a loving new home in which to spend his twilight years. Although a little wary of other dogs when out, he currently lives with a dog and cats. He is used to teenagers and is described as lovable, quiet and lazy, liking nothing more than laying by the fire or in the sun!

Scooby - Currently in Kennels
Age 4 Years
Ridgeless Female

Due to a change in her owners circumstance, Scooby is looking for a new home. She is good with people but is certainly not happy around small dogs. However, she may do well with dogs of her own size.

Scooby
Poppy - Has found a lovely new home
Age 1 Year
Ridgeless Female

Poppy has been re-homed once during her short life. Unfortunately she didn't get along with the other dog in the household. She is good with people but may have to be re-homed as an only dog.

Spike - Currently at Home
Age 7 Years
Male

Unfortunately due to a change in his owners circumstances lovely Spike is looking for a loving new home.

He is a really laid back character of excellent temperament and good with children. Would almost certainly settle as an only dog or with bitches, since he seems to have no desire to wear the trousers!
Spike
Simba - Has found a lovely new home
Age 20 Months
Female

Due to the children in her household developing an allergy to her, Simba is looking for a loving new home.

She is Miss Placid, very calm and of course used to children.

Is she for you?

Zy - Currently in Kennels
Age 7 Years
Male

Unfortunately due to a change in his owners circumstances Zy is looking for a loving new home.

He doesn't like to be left for long periods and when in the past he has been, he has been destructive. However, at the kennels he has been the perfect gentleman, not touching a thing.

Could you give him the chance of a new life?

While she has never lived with young children she is certainly enthusiastic over "her" teenagers.

Sam - Currently at Home
Age 6 Years
Male

Sadly for both Sam and his current owner, circumstances dictate that they must part. Later in the year his owner is going to live abroad in a flat within a tower block and realises this is no good for Sam.

Can you offer this boy a chance to keep his feet on the ground?

Recently Re-Homed Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Should you feel that you are not in a position to be able to offer one of these dogs a home it is possible to help in other ways. Various events are arranged each year in support of Rescue including a Christmas Party and Spring/Summer Fun Day. Fun and games are the order of the day at both events with good food and social ridgeback chat in abundance. For the more adventurous there is even a chance to take part in agility; no, not for humans, just the dogs, have you seen our committee!!!!

Apart from supporting these social occasions you may alternatively, or indeed as well as, like to make a monetary donation to Rescue funds. This can be made as a one off payment or a monthly payment for which a standing order can be set up. Should this idea tickle your fancy please contact
Our treasurer Mr Paul Hewson on 01536 267892

Club policy dictates that:-

Taking on an adult Ridgeback can be very rewarding for both parties. Experience shows the vast majority of adoptions are happy and successful. Few dogs are un-trainable and will respond to firm sensitive handling coupled with kindness and affection. Once you have gained their confidence and respect they will reward you with affection, loyalty and a great deal of enjoyment.
